Is My A/C Low On Refrigerant?

low a/c refrigerant massachusetts

You rely on your central air conditioner all summer to keep you comfortable in your central Massachusetts home – especially this year – so when it’s not working the way it should, it’s a problem that needs to be taken care of right away.

One thing to keep an especially close eye on in the weeks ahead is the temperature of the air coming from your cooling vents. If the air is warmer than usual – or if you notice ice forming on the lines of your outdoor unit after you’ve run your A/C for a few hours – you might have a refrigerant leak.

What Is Refrigerant?

Refrigerant (such as FREON) is used to move heat from inside to outside your home. When refrigerant levels are low, heat builds in your outdoor unit’s condenser coils, at first decreasing cool air output and eventually causing your cooling system to overheat (or even fail).

Refrigerant levels often drop due to very small leaks in your compressor that you can’t see with the naked eye; an expert cooling technician will check for these leaks during an annual air conditioning tune-up if they see that refrigerant levels are low.

Check Your Air Filter

If your air conditioner is not blowing cold air, check and change your A/C air filter before calling us for service. If that doesn’t fix the problem, a refrigerant recharge may be all you need.

But if you’ve recharged your system several times in recent years, it might be time to consider a high-efficiency A/C upgrade – especially if your current system uses FREON, which is no longer being produced (this is a significant factor to consider when weighing the benefits of repairing vs. replacing your AC system).
