Seven Heating Season Energy Saving Tips for Your Massachusetts Home
Want to keep your energy bills as low as possible this fall and winter? Try these seven energy saving tips.
Solar-ize – Take advantage of the sun’s radiant heat by opening sun-facing curtains during the day (just make sure to close them at night to keep that heat in).
Unblock vents and radiators – Make sure vents and radiators are free of heat-blocking obstacles like curtains and furniture. You should also close vents in unused rooms – why pay to heat a room you’re not in?
Use your ceiling fan – Warm air rises; a ceiling fan pushes that warm air back into the room. Just make sure your ceiling fan is set to turn in a clockwise direction (as you look at it), which pushes air down rather than drawing it up. Consult your owner’s manual to learn how to reverse the spin if you need to.
Use a programmable thermostat – Cutting your temperature by four degrees for 8-10 hours a day (while you’re at work or sleeping, for example) will save you about 10 percent on your annual heating bill.
Weatherize – More than 20 percent of the warm air produced by your furnace or boiler can escape through air leaks under windows and doors, around plumbing penetrations and chimneys, and in other places throughout your home. Inexpensive weatherization measures – caulk, weather stripping, door sweeps, and window plastic, to name a few – can take a bite out of that number.
Service your heating system – An annual tune-up (included in all our heating system service plans) keeps your heating system running at peak efficiency and reduces the likelihood of repairs. It’s a no-brainer investment – resist the temptation to skip it.
Upgrade your heating system – If your furnace or boiler is 15 years old or more, you’re entering a period where a heating system repair will no longer be cost effective. In fact, a heating system upgrade might be worth it for the improved efficiency and comfort benefits alone!
