In the early 1600s, nineteen pioneers negotiated with Chiefs Nehoiden and Maugus to purchase the land on which Wellesley Hills now sits. In the end, they paid five pounds sterling and three pounds of corn. The community was the first part of nearby Dedham, then later part of Needham.
The railroad brought many families and individuals from Boston in the 1830s, including Henry Durant. Durant founded Wellesley College, forever changing the character of the town. The school’s name came from that the mansion of one of Durant’s neighbors (a college benefactor), Horatio Hollis Hunnewell. In 1881, Wellesley separated from Needham and was incorporated as a town.
Among the notable people who called Wellesley Hills home was Katharine Lee Bates, a college professor who wrote “America the Beautiful.”
