Why Freon is Becoming Extinct

Freon is becoming extinct

The Environmental Protection Agency has accelerated its phaseout of R-22, commonly known as Freon. As a result, only 22 million pounds of this refrigerant will be produced this year. That number will dwindle to just four million pounds by 2019. No new or imported Freon will be allowed as of January 1, 2020. As you can imagine, the vanishing supply has caused the price of Freon to skyrocket.

Why is Freon vanishing? It’s considered a greenhouse gas and harms the environment when released into the air. That’s why all cooling systems now use modern, environmentally friendly refrigerants. If your system is 10 years old or older and beginning to wear out, it makes sense to look into your replacement options. If your system is less than eight years old, keep it covered with your Needham Silver Cooling Plan.

Please contact us and we’ll be glad to evaluate your system and discuss your options for eliminating your worries about the high cost of Freon.
