Any heating fuel and service company can get the job done when it’s 40 degrees outside and the weather is clear. But we set a higher standard at Needham Oil Complete Heating & Cooling.

This past winter brought us moderate conditions for the most part, except for two separate arctic-level cold blasts. The first started on Christmas Eve, and the second in early February. Both blasts made it feel like the coldest weather we’ve had in many years.

Our employees really stepped up during these rugged conditions. They sacrificed their own Christmas cheer to protect our customers, working around the clock on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

We are so proud of their extraordinary work this past winter.

We’re committed to doing our part to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change. We started by converting our fuel from traditional heating oil to Bioheat® fuel with a 2% blend of renewable biofuel.

Today, we deliver Bioheat Plus® fuel, which has a 20% biofuel component. This is a big step forward in immediately reducing greenhouse gas emissions without the huge costs associated with converting your home to electric heat pumps.

Not only do heating systems burn fuel more efficiently with our B20 Bioheat Plus fuel but they also last longer and require fewer repairs. No system modifications are necessary.

The endgame is to transition to B100 Bioheat fuel (100% biodiesel). Recently, the country’s largest producer of heating oil burners, the R.W. Beckett Corporation, announced it had begun production of the first fully warrantied burners with B100-compliant components.

Additionally, the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) has demonstrated that a home in New York heated with 100% biodiesel and using solar panels to produce electricity can reach net-zero carbon emissions quickly — and at an economically viable cost.

All of this is exciting news for everyone who appreciates the many benefits of using heating oil to stay safe and warm, but wants to do their part for the environment.

When David R. of Needham started shopping for a heat pump two years ago, he suffered sticker shock when he got his first two price quotes.

“The first two HVAC contractors quoted me a price that seemed crazy high,” he recalled.

Fortunately, David’s third heat pump estimate came from us, which was about 50% below the others.

“It almost seemed too good to be true. But then I called a few customer references that Needham had given me. Every person told me they were 100% satisfied with the professional installation and fair price they had received.”

Although we’re known as a heating oil company, we actually install all types of heating equipment, and we’re experts when it comes to heat pump installations. Plus, we’re well-versed in taking care of everything that’s needed to allow you to take advantage of available rebates and other incentives.

“Randy from Needham recommended a Bryant heat pump and it’s been great,” David said.
Later on, we installed a Mitsubishi ductless system to keep the finished basement and add-on sunroom comfortable.

“We’re very happy,” David said. “Our home is staying comfortable and we’re saving a lot of money on heating and cooling now because we’re using the latest energy-efficient systems. Needham also helped us qualify for thousands of dollars in Mass Save rebates. They really came through when we needed their expertise the most.”

The year is 1872. President Ulysses S. Grant wins re-election. Massachusetts native Susan B. Anthony gets arrested for trying to vote. A fire destroys nearly 1,000 buildings in Boston.

That same year, the seeds for Needham Oil Complete Heating & Cooling were planted when a small wood and coal company called Willett & Chadwick was founded. That company would be purchased in 1941 by my grandfather, Ralph Woodcock, who renamed the business Needham Oil Company. The rest is history.

You won’t be surprised when I tell you that very few companies have been around for 150 years. Our ability to take care of our customers through all these years has only been possible because of the efforts of our amazing employees. Besides having a wealth of experience, they are nice people you can trust, whether they are making a repair, installing new equipment, talking with you on the phone or filling up your heating oil tank.

Of course, we couldn’t have made it this far without another fantastic group of people: our family of customers.
To mark our 150th year in business, we’re holding a special promotion to thank our customers for their unwavering loyalty.

We thank you for your support and confidence in us, whether you have been with us for decades or just recently joined us. We look forward to taking care of you for years to come.

In early October, OPEC announced it would slash crude oil production by two million barrels a day. Within just three days, our suppliers increased the cost of heating oil by 70 cents per gallon!

This is not just impacting heating oil. Expect natural gas, electricity, gasoline and propane to move higher too. This is not simply about supply and demand. When prices move this far this fast, you can always see the impact of Wall Street firms that jump in to take advantage of the momentum to make a quick buck. It frustrates the heck out of us.

Of course, by the time you’re reading this, things may have turned around just as quickly. We saw prices spike in spring only to drop by over a dollar in summer. There are just too many variables to know where things will go from here.

There are many things we can’t control, but we will always prioritize our existing customers over new ones. We will go the extra mile to keep you safe and warm. And we will be there when you need us.

Q: Does it make sense to convert my home to a heat pump now?
A: There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this, because homes differ dramatically in terms of their size, lay out, and existing heating infrastructure. What’s more, while improvements in heat pump technology are promising, most of our customers still want to keep their existing natural gas or oil systems to do the harder work on cold winter days.

We’ve installed more heat pumps than just about anyone in our service area. If you call, we can help guide you through your options. We are also experts at securing the maximum rebates available from Mass Save, and we back our installations with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
