AFUE is expressed as a percentage. In a heating system with 84 AFUE, 84 percent of the heating oil consumed goes to heating the home. The rest is lost.
Today’s oil-fired furnaces have AFUE ratings between 84 percent and 90 percent.
However, a furnace that is over a decade old may have lost much of its efficiency over time. Your old furnace could be reduced to an AFUE in the low 60s. As you can imagine, arranging an oil furnace replacement — and improving your AFUE by 30 percent — can do wonders for lowering fuel usage.
